Lately, there has been a lot of buzz surrounding the topic of yoga. So I ask myself, “What’s the big deal anyway? All you do is sweat and stretch, right?” Wrong. Through reading Ellie Goulding’s article in Self, I discovered that yoga fulfills so much more than that.

According to Time, “A path to enlightenment that winds back 5,000 years in its native India, yoga has suddenly become so hot, so cool, so very this minute.”  Yoga has become the ‘it’ workout for celebrities, and I have started to see why- yoga provides a link between two powerful cultures and thus, two different ways of viewing the world. In a moment, Western and Indian traditions collide, allowing individuals to release tension and calm themselves while saying “Namaste.” In Self, Ellie states, “It’s (training) is part of my life. It is something I need to do every day, because it affects my mood, my fitness, even my mind-set onstage.” Yoga is not just an exercise, it is a way of life- a healthy one at that.

Although Afrobeatnik’s three main missions include diversity, ethics, and individuality, we also recognize the beneficial ways being healthy contributes to a person’s life. Being healthy goes beyond looking a certain way, it is about feeling good and having the energy to thrive. Afrobeatnik expresses wellness through our Pinterest board: Fitness, and in honor of Ellie Goulding’s testimonial, here are a few of Afrobeatnik’s favorite pins:

1.) Health is a relationship between you and your body. Exercise and yoga allows the two to become one and connect on a deeper level.

2.) Fit is not a destination; it’s a way of life. Make fitness a part of your routine, guaranteed you will feel better.

3.) Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self. Yoga allows the mind, body and spirit to connect in order to feel at peace with yourself.
